I'd been putting off the sergeant's board for two years. Six sessions in, I had a plan with dates on it. I sat the board in March.

Common questions

Before you enroll

01What is coaching?+

Coaching is structured, performance-focused development delivered by a trained external professional. It is designed to improve decision-making, communication, accountability, leadership capability, and career direction.

It is not therapy, and it is not a grievance channel. Your coach sits outside your chain of command and has no stake in how you look at work, which is what lets you speak candidly. Sessions are 60 minutes, one-on-one, and driven by goals you set.

02Who are the coaches?+

Vetted, professional executive and performance coaches. Some come from high-accountability environments — public safety, military, and government. Others bring civilian-sector expertise, from business and finance to health, fitness, and nutrition, so the bench covers the whole of your career and your life outside it.

They are certified through Performance Protocol's coaching training program, led by former Directors and instructors of the FBI National Academy and supported by ICF-accredited coaching professionals. Each coach:

  • Is formally trained and credentialed in professional coaching methodologies
  • Has experience supporting leadership development and performance improvement
  • Understands public safety culture and performance standards
  • Brings a specialty — leadership, career strategy, business, financial wellbeing, health and fitness
  • Operates within a structured, confidential framework

Coaches are matched to you based on your role, your development goals, and the expertise you are looking for — never assigned from inside your command.

03What can I expect to gain from this?+

Most people come in with a career question and find the work reaches further than that. What you get out of it depends on what you bring, but the pattern across agencies is consistent.

Career and promotion. A clear path to the next rank or assignment, and a record of preparation with dates on it. Coaches work promotional board prep, assessment centers, resumes and interviews, and the question of which direction is actually right for you.

On the job. Stronger command presence, cleaner decision-making under pressure, better handling of difficult personnel conversations, and more consistent supervisory effectiveness.

Off the job. Career pressure does not stay at work. Coaches routinely help people work through:

  • Shift work, sleep, and the habits that hold up over a 25-year career
  • Stress that follows you home, and the boundary between the two
  • Financial planning around promotion, overtime, pension timing, and retirement
  • Time with family, and the trade-offs a schedule change actually costs
  • Deciding what comes after this career, and preparing for it early

Coaching is not therapy, medical care, or licensed financial advice, and your coach will tell you when something belongs with a professional in that field. What it does is give you one hour, on the calendar, to think clearly about your life and your career with someone who has no stake in the outcome.

04How often do I meet with my coach?+

It depends on what you need and what your coach recommends. Some people meet weekly. Others meet every other week. Some engage for only a few focused sessions a year around a specific transition or challenge. Sessions are always 60 minutes.

The goal is not to maximize session count. It is measurable outcomes — stronger performance, clearer decision-making, and real career movement.

Coaches often assign structured work between sessions: leadership exercises, communication strategies, feedback to implement, behavioral commitments. Progress comes from applied learning, not meeting cadence.

05What do we talk about?+

Whatever moves your career and your performance. Common topics:

  • Transitioning into a new rank or assignment
  • Managing difficult personnel conversations
  • Strengthening communication and command presence
  • Improving decision-making under pressure
  • Navigating generational dynamics on your team
  • Clarifying career direction and promotion readiness
  • Handling performance feedback constructively
  • Managing stress while maintaining standards

The agenda is yours. Coaches help you identify blind spots, clarify priorities, and put practical strategies to work.

06Is this confidential?+

Yes. What you discuss with your coach stays between you and your coach. Session content, personal disclosures, and individual development conversations are not shared with supervisors or command staff.

What the agency sees is aggregate, anonymized data — never individual session details. Trend-level insights only:

  • Morale indicators
  • Intention-to-quit risk trends
  • Agency loyalty measures
  • Willingness to recommend the agency as a place to work

Your privacy is protected. Organizational insight is preserved.

07How is this different from wellness or other agency programs?+

Wellness and mentoring programs are valuable, but they serve different purposes. Wellness focuses on mental health support, resilience, and crisis response. Mentoring pairs you with a more experienced member for informal guidance.

Coaching is structured, performance-focused, and delivered by trained external professionals. Key differences:

  • External and confidential — not part of the chain of command
  • Structured and measurable — goal-setting and progress tracking
  • Performance-oriented — professional growth, not support alone
  • Available agencywide — not limited to early-career pairing

Mentoring helps you learn the culture. Wellness helps you manage stress. Coaching helps you perform at a higher level.
